Hello again -- As of today I have read your last three chapters and loved them, I wanted to try to make a few comments on each one. To start off, I just want to compliment you on how brilliantly you and <lj-user "trovia"> have linked your headcanons across this fic and "Spin Control". You've nailed the psychology of Haymitch's journey from traumatized 16-yr-old to despairing 40-yr-old, and you also make me feel like I am reading about the same universe. So kudos to you both.
I just wanted to hug Haymitch during this. You brilliantly portray the torture of the role Haymitch is being forced to play -- the role that every victor is forced to play, tailored to cause the maximum amount of anguish to each one. To paraphrase something trovia wrote in SC, Haymitch's pain is just wonderful as long as it screen-tests well. Um, now I am thinking about your crack fic where Magnus the cameraman decides that he definitely needs to keep Snow's bloodstained body in frame and giggling. My mind is twisted.
The part that killed me the most was the scene with the Avox. Haymitch is learning that there is simply no safe way to express his overwhelming pain and rage. No matter what he does, he hurts someone. It's another experience that teaches him to suppress his emotional reactions and turn his anger inward.
Lucilla is an intriguing character. She has all the Capitol privileged cluelessness and is cheerfully participating in genocide, but still seems to be a little more savvy and compassionate than Effie. I'm a little uneasy at how touchy-feely she gets with Haymitch and I'm not yet sure if she's just being motherly or if it's something else. :-/ Anyway, it makes sense that she can have some sympathy for Haymitch whilst completely missing the big picture, as that's exactly what happened with Effie during the 75th games.
